DWill It seems odd to survey a person's biography, see that the Christian religion was central to it (as DH has illustrated), yet still appear to claim that King's humanism was independent of his Christianity. Doesn't Christianity have enough materials to act as a strong inspiration for King? Relig...

Gentle Reader: I didn't know about mise-en-abyme - thanks for that. I'll bet I can drop that on my AP exam and really impress the scorers. :D Penelope: I'm not really sure about people's characters showing in their faces. In many cases I've found this to be true, however I've known several people wi...

I was glancing over the past few pages and I noticed something - it mentions the unique mirror that Lord Henry gave Dorian. I remember it being referenced earlier in the book. We've already pointed out that both Lord Henry and Basil both tried to influence Dorian. Henry encouraged him to value youth...

Frank 013 From what little I know of MLK he defiantly was a Christian… but to say that he would not have been motivated to work for equal civil rights for blacks without a Christian background is just plain ridiculous. I think a lot of this comes back to a point Hitchens returned to time and time a...

I'd like to minor in music, because it's something I really love. But I'm probably going to major in science or mathematics - physics would be really neat. I might like to work for NASA or the Defense Department someday . . . but I'm not really sure. :hmm:

Hitchens' main point in this chapter seems to be that religion has a tendancy to make people behave worse, and that people who show compassion for their fellow man do so in spite of, or at least independently of, religion, instead of because of it. How did [the man who tried to repair the damage cau...

Same here. It's only April and already hot - ugh. When I go to college, it's definitely going to be somewhere up north.

In the beginning I liked him. He seemed so easy going, if a little shallow. But as the story progressed, I began to notice the enormous impact he had on the people around him. His wife once said that all of his friends had the same ideas as him. And Lord Henry himself thought of Dorian as a psycholo...

I felt that Basil and Lord Henry represented good and evil in a general way, as well as more specifically as the conflicting desire for good and temptation for evil within everyone. Sort of like the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. This relationship is shown at the end of Chapter 2,...
