This is an interesting section...the intro to the section is essentially the thesis for Guns, Germs & Steel, if I understand it correctly (I have, but haven't read GGS). So it may be a simplified version of what some of you have already read...so let's discuss it, while there's still time left in our quarter! :p

The chapter on the last first contacts is fascinating.
