The dictionary says that 'teazle' comes from Old English and Old German - Taesel - which means to draw out.
When you tease someone you draw out their irritation or embarassment. But if you have splinter in your thumb, you also tease it out, and on a billiard table's green baize you draw out the threads, so I suppose the words are related.
Isn't language so interesting?
In fact if you get a teazle stuck to your glove when walking the canals as we do, it can be ludicrously irritating trying to lose it.

Re: Poem on your mind
It's my birthday today and to hear a word from Saffron or DWill would really make my day!!
I am posting this terrible poem to try to provoke a response!!!
My Satnav
I have a little Satnav
It sits there in my car
A Satnav is a driver's friend
It tells you where you are
I have a little Satnav
I've had it all my life
It's better than the normal ones
My Satnav is my wife
It gives me full instructions
Especially how to drive
"It's thirty miles an hour", it says
"You're doing thirty five"
It tells me when to stop and start
And when to use the brake
And tells me that it's never ever
Safe to overtake
It tells me when a light is red
And when it goes to green
It seems to know instinctively
Just when to intervene
It lists the vehicles just in front
And all those to the rear
And taking this into account
It specifies my gear.
I'm sure no other driver
Has so helpful a device
For when we leave and lock the car
It still gives its advice
It fills me up with counselling
Each journey's pretty fraught
So why don't I exchange it
And get a quieter sort?
Ah well, you see, it cleans the house,
Makes sure I'm properly fed,
It washes all my shirts and things
And keeps me warm in bed!
Despite all these advantages
And my tendency to scoff,
I only wish that now and then
I could turn the bugger off.

Re: Poem on your mind
How about a poem from The Vogon Poets Society? http://vogon-poets.livejournal.com/
Here's one of my favourites from over there: (dated Tuesday March 24 2009, by Rob T Firefly) - maybe not quite as gruesome as an actual Vogon poet might make it but not at all bad for a earthling.

Tuesday
I sit in a chair
Which smells a bit like yogurt
But not any yogurt you'd want
To eat
The clock slowly ticks
Without a ticking noise
That is because it is
Digital
Actually it's not
So much a yogurt smell
Perhaps it is more like
A cheese
The kind of cheese
That smells only a bit
Like
Yogurt
Were my chair a left arm
It would be suffering
From a badly sprained
Wrist
Can I
Go
Home
Now?
Please?
I've always found it rather exciting to remember that there is a difference between what we experience and what we think it means.

Hello Frog! Nothing much happening on here as Saffron and DWill seem to have absconded.
I always take it personally. Bit paranoid I suppose.

Yes, as Penny says, the poetry thread is a little quiet, so jump into the void !!froglipz wrote:I like that one. Thank you for sharing it.

Perhaps Penelope you should apply for moderator for this forum....
I have had something ringing through my head for a while, it's terrible when you can't shake one. I remember my Dad reading this one to me.....
Time To Rise
A BIRDIE with a yellow bill
Hopped upon the window sill,
Cocked his shining eye and said:
“Ain’t you ’shamed, you sleepy-head!”
Robert Louis Stevenson
drivel I know, but like a song, it will not go....so now you are all stuck with it LoL

Re: Poem on your mind
Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal- Lord Alfred Tennyson
Now sleeps the crimson petal, now the white;
Nor waves the cypress in the palace walk;
Nor winks the gold fin in the porphyry font:
The firefly wakens: waken thou with me.
Now droops the milkwhite peacock like a ghost,
And like a ghost she glimmers on to me.
Now lies the Earth all Danae to the stars,
And all thy heart lies open unto me.
Now slides the silent meteor on, and leaves
A shining furrow, as thy thoughts in me.
Now folds the lily all her sweetness up,
And slips into the bosom of the lake:
So fold thyself, my dearest, thou, and slip
Into my bosom and be lost in me.
Now sleeps the crimson petal, now the white;
Nor waves the cypress in the palace walk;
Nor winks the gold fin in the porphyry font:
The firefly wakens: waken thou with me.
Now droops the milkwhite peacock like a ghost,
And like a ghost she glimmers on to me.

Wow, I didn't know that one. What a lovely, lovely poem! Thankyou Mads!madasin wrote:

It's a sort of 'shimmery' poem this. Some people do seem to shimmer don't they? Like our Saffron.
I would be glad to, although it would be a case of 'what I lack in talent, I make up for in enthusiasm'. However, Saffron, is the Moderator of this forum and she has stuck doggedly to it and really made it. She is also enormously qualified to do it and we are privilidged to have her lovely company.frog wrote: Perhaps Penelope you should apply for moderator for this forum....
I don't know where she's gone and am hoping she isn't ill. DWill was on another thread the other day, so I wonder if he knows what's happened to Saffron? I'm sure he has a very good reason for not saying, because he's that kind of man. I trust his integrity.
