Just finished watching Roman Holiday for what must be the 20th time. I still love it! So, from the lips of Audrey Hepburn, at least the first line of the poem --

Arethusa

Arethusa arose
From her couch of snows
In the Acroceraunian mountains,--
From cloud and from crag,
With many a jag,
Shepherding her bright fountains.
She leapt down the rocks,
With her rainbow locks

Today is a flower day --

Just the first stanza:
The Picture of Little T. C. in a Prospect of Flowers

Forgive me for offering a little more Inayat Khan:-

I look to Thee O Lord, when I try to do right and it turns to wrong.
I look to Thee O Lord, when all in life seems as naught to me and I feel a yearning for something beyond.

The spring that riseth out of my heart Thou pourest upon me....... and my spirit feeleth the exaltation of being disolved under Thy divine shower.

(I might add that we are at present enduring monsoon-like rainfall - everywhere is awash......

....and we'll have some great potatoes come the Autumn!! ;-)
Only those become weary of angling who bring nothing to it but the idea of catching fish.

He was born with the gift of laughter and a sense that the world is mad....

I've been reading a book titled, Bread Body Spirit: Finding the Sacred in Food, ed. by Alice Peck. It is a collection of contemplations on food and what it means to us. I am enjoying the book very much, as food had always been an interest, really a passion, of mine for as long as I can remember. The stanza that begins "I don't want you to..." appears in the book, after reading it I felt inspired to share the whole poem.


Rice

It grew under the tiger's orange paws.
Its stems thicker than candles, and as straight.
Its leaves like the feathers of egrets,
but green.

The grains cresting, wanting to burst.

I think the day will be too hot to be out, so, inside I will be with poetry. I like the last stanza ---

Back with the Quakers

You think you can handle these things:
sunlight glinting off a red Jaguar
honking at the old woman who has snagged

her shopping cart on a snow rut,
or the swaggering three-piece suit who steps
outside the bank, earless to the mossy voice

at his feet asking for spare change,
but then the crunch of something, nothing really,
under your shoe--a dirty comb, a pen cap--

completely undoes you, and it's too much,
too much, being balanced, considering
the complexity of all sides in one

syntactically correct sentence.
All the driver has to say is "Move it,
Lady," and you're back with the Quakers

who trained you to lie still and limp in the street.
Three days they stepped on your hair,
ground cigarettes half an inch from your nose,

while you lay there, trying to be against
violence, your fists tight as grenades
and a payload of curses between your teeth,

O woman, with a mind Picasso
could have painted, giving you many cheeks,
each one turned a different way.

Of asphodel, that greeny flower,
like a buttercup
upon its branching stem-
save that it's green and wooden-

a life filled,

when I came first to know

I'm filled with the fading memory of those flowers

is complex and the place made
in our lives
for the poem.
Silence can be complex too,
but you do not get far
with silence.
Begin again.
It is like Homer's
catalogue of ships:
it fills up the time.
I speak in figures,
well enough, the dresses
you wear are figures also,
we could not meet
otherwise. When I speak
of flowers
it is to recall
that at one time
we were young.
All women are not Helen,
I know that,
but have Helen in their hearts.
My sweet,
you have it also, therefore
I love you
and could not love you otherwise.
Imagine you saw
a field made up of women
all silver-white.
What should you do
but love them?
The storm bursts
or fades! it is not
the end of the world.
Love is something else,
or so I thought it,
a garden which expands,
though I knew you as a woman
and never thought otherwise,
until the whole sea
has been taken up
and all its gardens.
It was the love of love,
the love that swallows up all else,
a grateful love,
a love of nature, of people,
of animals,
a love engendering
gentleness and goodness
that moved me

that the lily-of-the-valley

Poem of This Moment

HI, Everyone,

I hope you are all well and happy. This poem comes to mind as the poem of this moment, today. It's an often-excerpted chorus from a longer ballad poem with many verses by an anonymous poet of the 1600's. It's titled "Tom O' Bedlam" :
With a host of furious fancies
Whereof I am commander,
With a burning spear and a horse of air,
To the wilderness I wander.
By a knight of ghostes and shadowes
I summon'd am to tourney
Ten leagues beyond the wild world's end.
Methinks it is no journey.
