I can't believe China is not on this list. You show a serious bias toward modern technology. But where would we be without paper? Or even pasta for that matter? _____________Trip with me...www.blogtimesherald.com/ann

I have to qualify this by saying it is mostly tongue in cheek, but the largest contribution to mankind by a single country is China, they have added more billions of souls than any other. If you mean which modern nation has advanced science, or literature, or raw productivity to Western Civilzation I would say the USA, with honorable mentions for a few others. If you mean historic breakthroughs that were the seeds to our modern technological societies that have allowed the population to grow well beyond the carrying capacity of the planet then there is credit enough for many, but the French are high up with the studies of Pastuer and the Americans with the work of Salk. Antibiotics are probably about the most enabling of discoveries making the world what is is today. The next round goes to the inventor of very cheap and non polluting safe energy. Still it is a good question if a bit vague. I do not want to be the one that tries to redefine what you are asking. I would think we would have to list what the advances are and then see who made them. The point may well best be illustrated by showing where history has seen a civilization make advances and then totally fail to capitalize on them. For instance, the Inca's had childrens toys made of wood with wheels on them, yet never employed the wheel on an adult level. Similarly, if your values are that a self-sufficient, stable, and renewable society is the most advanced then we would have to look to Polynesians and Himalayian people for their contributions. I am surprised to see that the Americans ( & Canadians ) want to forget Great Britain!

Geez! There is a limit to the amount of buttons(hence, options) Chris can put on a poll! Cut him some slack on what should and shouldn't have made it to the poll and just take the darn poll or post about why you think some other country has contributed the most!

ooooh, Chris. What a can of worms you have opened! Ruinean: Quote:If you mean which modern nation has advanced science, or literature, or raw productivity to Western Civilzation I would say the USA, with honorable mentions for a few others.Uh, the first epic poems, plays, narratives were Greek; the first major essayist was French; centuries full of poetry, drama & fiction that are still read today were written before the USA was a twinkle in the pilgrims' eyes (apologies for the terrible mixed metaphor!). Pasteur, Curie, Darwin, Newton, Galileo, Gutenberg...are not USian. I'm not knocking the States, (you've got a lot of great authors & poets & scientists) I just wish some of you would open a history book before making sweeping statements about the rest of the world. Weird and wonderful technological advances? Japan. Otherwise, any country that initiated a writing system, taught its people to read & write, and disseminated the written word has my vote. I wasn't trying to imply that the nations listed above deserve to be listed. I created the poll rather quickly thinking it might be fun and get us all talking about what makes a nation great.

Undeniably the Gutenberg press was an invention that contributed greatly to the progress of mankind, so Germany has a special place in the history of man. But did you know that without the paper and inks and movable type invented by the Chinese, Gutenberg couldn't have made his press. Then again, if it weren't for the Arabs, it might have been two hundred more years before anyone could get the Chinese to share the secret of paper. It took someone in the Middle East kidnapping and torturing a Chinese paper maker before the rest of the world could learn the trick. _____________Trip with me...www.blogtimesherald.com/ann
