I'm voting for The Sopranos, but all of them are incredible. If you haven't watched some of these series check them out sometime. You'll become addicted like me.

The Sopranos! A close second is Curb Your Enthusiasm.

It's hard to choose. I would include Six Feet Under to the mix, knowing that it is out of production, but it is what convinced me that HBO's dramatic series were worthy of serious consideration. There is something about Rome, Sopranos and Deadwood that fires a real contradiction in my heart: they portray powerful, violent alpha-males in constant war for domination and control...and I love it. Yes, I confess, the Jesus-lovin', Chomsky-spoutin', Socialist-preachin' Dissident-Heart is absolutely fascinated by the lead male characters in these series. In a deep sense, Deadwood and Sopranos are renditions of the Ceasar theme: brutal leaders who attract a following by way of political genius, vibrant larger-than-life charisma, lavish generosity tied to extreme punitiveness, and a will to power that does not cower to threats or fear. Still, these men are bound to very particular rules that, again, harken back to Roman social systems held together by codes of honor and shame. And, they are warriors who expect extraordinary things from themselves and their soldiers: no sacrifice too heavy or price too high; unless it be the shame of dishonor. But they are surely human-all-too human, filled with greed, avarice, vanity, lust and outright ignorance. They are often their own worst enemy, and are forced to spend inordinate amounts of time remedying stupid mistakes resulting from moments of rage and grandiosity.I think Deadwood is the best between Rome and Sopranos. I find its aesthetic sense of historical place to be flawless: both in scenery and dialogue. Another similarity of the three is the passionate/liberal usage of "co**-su**er" and "fu**" in ways that make sense and perhaps highlight something universal in human nature.....I look forward to watching Octavian develop into Augustus and if the transformation from Republic to Empire and Pax Romana tells us more about being 21st Century Americans.

I agree that Rome kicks ass. I can't wait for the next season. But I'm really excited to know Sopranos is starting this March. Edited by: Chris OConnor  at: 2/2/06 10:44 pm

Six Feet Under hands down. Rome and Deadwood close contenders. The first half of the first season of The Wire should get an honorable mention. Sopranos was original and well written but has become repetitive and gratuitous, IMO.

I've been re-watching the Deadwood and Sopranos episodes, and am finding that Deadwood's Al Swearengen (played brilliantly by Ian McShane) and Sopranos' Tony Soprano (played almost as well by James Gandolfini) are very similar in their roles as Crime Bosses. They are tyrants to the core, ruthless and violent, and able to mete out terrific punishment: and they are astute politicians, understanding the role of negotiation, fear, bribery, compromise, and when to give up a skirmish in order to win the greater battle and war. They exhibit a fierce tenderness as well: a kind of warm and generous sensitivity that almost makes up for their brutalities. They are fast on their feet and quick to make up their minds, and they are able to pursuade others to do their bidding. And they know when they are being bullshittted or conned. They are far more complex than simply gangsters, but it is always clear that they are often very wicked men who have done horrible things.I can't wait for the next season of both.
