Hal Henry wrote:The Annotated 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' ... Martin Gardiner's compelling (so far) study of the S.T. Coleridge poem; beginning with a discussion of the four possibly correct ways of pronouncing the poet's name.
I love that poem. though it's been forever since I read it.
I am just your typical movie nerd, postcard collector and aspiring writer.

okay, just completed "Ancient Mariner." MANY pages of interpretations, and having seen a plethora of posts from folks here who have a religious/philosophical/ethical bent, I'm certain you'd find much to dwell upon in Martin Gardiner's annotated version. I was particularly taken with his interpretation of the pronunciation of S.T. Coleridge's name. The poet himself made three references to it in various epigrams: 1) "Could you stand upon Skiddaw, you would not from the whole ridge...see a man who so loves you as your fond S.T. Coleridge." 2) "Parry seeks the Polar ridge, rhymes seeks S.T. Coleridge." 3) "Elsewhere in College, knowledge, wit and scholarage...to Friends and Public known as S.T. Coleridge."
Gardiner posits (and I concur with) a fourth possibility: "that, as a joke, the poet rhymed his name incorrectly in all three instances, and that the correct pronunciation rhymes with 'doll ridge.'''

Have now begun John Shannon's "The Dark Streets," his 9th novel featuring Jack Liffey, an L.A.-bred guy who lost his job in the aerospace industry and has turned detective, specializing in finding lost children. I first saw a Shannon book in the "new" section of our library; liner notes described him as a modern Raymond Chandler. Since I love the Los Angeles atmosphere even in the 70s-80s, I set the book aside and spent some time seeking and acquiring his first effort, THE CONCRETE RIVER; a title certain to resonate with anybody who grew up riding bikes in that drainage ditch, or saw John Travolta racing his dragster in GREASE, or cringed as James Whitmore went after those giant ants in THEM.
But I digress. Suffice to say, I enjoy Shannon's character, Jack Liffey. Maybe you will, too; but read them in order.

I'm currently reading Just Another Kid by Torey L. Hayden. It is a non-fiction book about the author's experience teaching kids with mental disabilities. It was first published in the 1980's and it's the original hardcover that I picked up from the local library. I think that it is a fascinating look at her experience and how far programs in schools have come for people with special needs.
