Chris, are you saying that your suggested way is preferable to simply posting reviews or information about the book, so that we don't even have to go to a link? Yes, links are better. Being able to visit Amazon.com has many benefits. We can see the book cover art, copyright date, total number of pages, how many stars reviewers gave the book, editorial reviews, reader reviews, etc...

Another reason a link is helpful is it tells everyone that the book is available from online booksellers. We have members that live in rural areas where bookstores are only a dream. They have no choice but to buy from Amazon.com or another online seller. Also, seeing the book on Amazon.com tells us how much it costs and if there are used copies available for less money. If you saw that one of the books is only available in hardcover and costs $27.95 you might be less inclined to vote for it than the other cheaper books.

And yet another reason a link is essential is so that everyone is looking at the same edition of the book. We have recently read some books that are available in different editions, publishers or versions. Linking to the exact book eliminates that problem.
Just recently I accidentally put the wrong version of "Diary of a Madman and Other Stories" by Nikolai Gogol on our home page. Fixing that error took an extra 15 minutes for me. Imagine if members ordered the wrong version of the book. They would be frustrated.
