When my son was a toddler, he was all about the color pink, loved playing dolls and My Little Pony, and cried at the drop of a hat. I cannot tell you how many times people "warned" me he might be gay. Seriously? Not only did I find this incredibly offensive (so what if he was?), but incredibly presumptuous. Who gave them the right to judge him based on simple life choices?
I've been a high school teacher for 26 years, and I have seen this kind of behavior more than I liked to say. Not just kids, but adults, judging those around them based not just on the biggies - gender, sexuality, religion, color, age - but smaller, everyday choices, like clothing style, hairstyle, music preference....the list could go on, and on.

During a conversation with a student one day, I voiced some concern that it sounded like a friend of hers might be in an abusive relationship. When she told me she wasn't worried, because "he's a guy, and that doesn't happen," the concept for my first novel, Fred and Ginger are Learning to Dance, was born.

This YA novel is meant not only to tell an entertaining and intriguing story, but also meant to get us thinking and talking about how we allow social constructs to influence our assumptions of those around us. It's available for Kindle and in paperback on Amazon. I hope you'll take a moment to check it out, and let me know what you think!
