Kim Kahana-The Untold Stories
The story begins in the Hawaiian territory in 1941. Kim Kahana, a young island boy, experiences a carefree and happy childhood. He attends a traditional school and goes to the Hawaiian ritual area for another kind of education. In the ritual area, he learns about his Hawaiian culture, beliefs, legends and dangerous form of martial arts. The lessons are considered as the supreme and fundamental sources of power, being and truth .
Then on December 7th, 1941 Kim’s island life suddenly changes when Japan attacks Pearl Harbor. This act thrusts the United States into World War II. After the attack, martial law is enacted by the American military forces. This act dramatically changes the lives of all the islanders. They must now endure far less freedom and a strict, military controlled environment.Under martial law, anyone can be arrested and jailed without reasonable cause.Any man, woman or child out after curfew faces the risk of being jailed or shot.
Most of the schools are forced to close for the occupation by the military. Kim along with many other Hawaiian children never return to school. There is also a shortage of laborers on the farms and sugar cane plantations. The island adults and children must make up for the shortage and become the new laborers on the farms and plantations.
Kim finds escape from the harsh realities of his life when he walks down to the docks to talk to the American sailors. He bonds with Billy, a young American sailor, who tells the boy adventurous tales and thrilling stories about life on the mainland. These stories leave a profound impression on Kim.
Billy’s stories invoke in Kim a desire and determination to escape his harsh life by voyaging to America. Then one day, Billy tells him that he will be shipping out tomorrow to San Francisco.Kim is devastated that his friend is leaving. Then he starts to think that this is his chance to stowaway aboard Billy’s ship to the mainland.
That night he sneaks out of his hut and goes down to the docks. He is careful to avoid the military police seeing him.He finally makes it to Billy’s ship. He’s about to sneak aboard. However, his escape is short lived. He hears a loud whistle and sees an ensign pointing a gun at him and shouting for him to stop. Kim has nowhere to run, and the ensign captures him.He feels sorry for the boy and decides not turn him over to the military police; instead, he forcefully brings Kim back to his father.
When Kim returns to the sugar cane plantation, the islanders shun him and the children bully him and call him a fool, a big fool for his actions. He feels like an outcast. He no longer has many friends because of the disgrace he caused upon himself, his father and the village by his attempt to stowaway. He is hurt but refuses to think of himself as a victim.Instead, with lots of determination,he begins a quest to become stronger in his mind, body and spirit.
He occupies his time, by learning all the lessons presented in the ritual areas. He also learns to maneuver the machete in the sugar cane field with precision. He also practices and practices Hawaii’s form of martial arts to become an expert. Within two years, he has earned the respect of the islanders.
However, he has not let go of his dream to voyage to the mainland. He is determined to turn his dream into a reality. Then in 1945, his chance comes after World War II.
This is the beginning of Kim’s life that sets him on a path of dangerous journeys, exciting escapes and courageous deeds. With the help of a secret weapon, and by using the most daring methods imaginable, he survives. His journeys lead him to become a Korean War Hero, legendary Hollywood stuntman, fire sword dancer, martial artist and a sensei.
