The Gift of the Magi and the Banana Republic

Until recently a Banana Republic referred to an unstable third world country with a despotic government. Despite the emergence of a a mall outlet of the same name most of us still think of the country when we hear the term but I doubt that many of you know that the term was coined in a book of short stories called, Cabbages for Kings, written by 'O. Henry' while he was in Hondoras attempt to avoid prosecution for embezzlement from a bank.
