Sad, bad news for book lovers

John Updike, who died this past Tuesday, came out with so many books, I wonder who ever had time to keep up with him. But he was one of our extraordinary writers, about as far from a hack as one could be, despite his enormous production. We should pick one of his novels for a future choice, without doubt. I read only a few of them, the "Rabbit" books, The Centaur, and a later one. He couldn't help but write memorable prose.

I just read the Washington Post will stop publishing "Bookworld" soon. It is one of the only remaining stand-alone book sections published by a newspaper, and must certainly be the best. Well, newspapers are tanking in general, so I suppose it shoudn't be a surprise to see them cutting out their marginally successful products. But Bookworld has been a fixture for me for over 25 years and I will sorely miss it. This also means we won't be seeing the "Poet's Choice" columnthat Saffron gas been posting from Bookworld.

The loss of Bookworld is sad news indeed. I have been a devoted reader for the past 2o some years. I will especially miss the Poet's Choice column. I agree with DWill that BT should do an Updike novel. I've never read any. A few days ago I posted one of John Updike's poems on the Poem of the Moment thead -- the title is Penumbrae.
