A Review of Three Movies I Watched Recently...

Unread post

So with some early birthday money I bought a few 5 dollar movies from the bargain bin at the Walmart down at the end of my road. I watched 3 of them tonight. Here are my thoughts:

THE WATCH had a decent premise of a neighborhood watch battling against an alien invasion, but Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill all fell flat in their respective performances, and the writing was a half-formed mess. I especially felt shear dissappointment with Stiller; his work on NIGHT AT THE MUSEM showed promise, a promise on which he failed to deliver here. The whole experience was a mediocre one, and during the first half of the movie I wanted it to just get to the point already. I'd say catch it on TV one night, maybe rent it, otherwise find a more adequate flick.

THE SITTER was Jonah Hill at his worst; the movie was out there, and not the kind of out there that I like. Cringe-worthy jokes depend on a lot of variables to make them work, and none of that happened in this movie. At best the jokes just seemed tired and awkward; at worst they just reiterated the same douchebag, chavinist a-hole college mentality that is so easy to get sucked into these days if you aren't careful. I would not recommend this flick any time soon.

THE IRON GIANT is an oldie but a goodie from my childhood, and I'm glad I caught it in the bargain bin. The animation was beautiful, the voice acting was superb, and of course the script was a brilliant adaptation of an old Ted Hughes classic, "The Iron Man." Not really sure what else to say, save that this one gave me pause from bashing on Vin Diesel too much, given his rather excellent work here. Please, if you have not seen this movie, then do so.

OK, these are my thoughts. And with that I shall get some sleep, maybe catch some more movies here and there.

Have you see "Chef?"

If not I definitely recommend it. I'm not giving it an "A" but I strong "B" for sure.

I'm told I need to see "Meet the Millers." So far I haven't had time.

A video is worth 100 pictures and a picture is worth 1,000 words....or something like that.

Oh dang, Robert Downey, Jr. is brilliant. I want to see it now based on him alone.

I am going to see Interstellar today.
From what I hear there's a lot of talk about theoretical physics.

Interstellar is on my list too but I'll wait till it hits NetFlix.

Tyson gave it a pretty good review for accuracy.

It was pretty good. A bit longer than perhaps it should have been or could have been.
There are some common themes in it (future environmental catastrophes, love, intrepidity, boldly going where no man has gone before, etc).

Scientifically accurate? Well they made one mistake that most people would miss, I think.

The main character (Matthew M) said it would take a thousand years to get to the nearest star system (Alpha C)
He was wrong. It would take closer to 100K to get there with our current capabilities. And the movie didnt mention that space flight capabilities had advanced much. :P

I thought the movie was going to have a bit more theoretical dialogue.

Overall it was pretty good.

A doctor that is an acquaintance of mine went to the premier as a guest of the primary science consultant for the movie. I forgot his name but he now holds the "Richard Feynman Chair" at Cal Tech in Pasadena.
