In your opinion what is the saddest song ever written?
For me it's probably "I Dreamed A Dream" from Les Miserables. There's a hopeless quality to it that makes me tear up every time I hear it. Lol. I've been tearing up a lot lately since the movie is coming out Christmas day and that's the song they play in every ad for it!

"Strange Fruit"
The images it provokes are horrific and it is sung with dispair but it has a haunting beauty to it. Makes me cry everytime I hear it.

"Strange fruit", I agree, definitely.
Also, I would add the song "Undenied" by Portishead, painfully sad. You can listen to it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnzkcsgdisQ

youkrst and tom those are great songs! Thanks for posting them.
I have to add another sad song. This is a big of a cliche but "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" always makes me tear up.

And, since you mentioned tom and great songs, it reminded me of the song "Tom the Model", performed by Beth Gibbons.
I think her way of singing and her color of voice determines, or defines the sadness in her songs.
She is a great performer.

Leonard Cohen, Joan of Arc ~ or any of his other songs except for Jazz Police.
I'd like to see a stage presentation of Les Miserables. I was unsure about the book, but ended up liking it quite a bit. I was dreading the drawn out Waterloo analysis but enjoyed that too.

Re: What is the saddest song?
For me it's Enclosure, it's a soundtrack from a game called Metal Gear Solid, but due to the entire scene depicted that played while that song played it's one of those songs that really makes me sad.
I also used that song as background music in a game I programmed, for a memorial scene that I created for one of the players that passed away. So yeah, that song has a special meaning to me. You can listen to the song on Youtube.
