Raising Little Monsters

Unread post

Bloom devotes a chapter to the way Arab children are raised, and the possible correlation between their child rearing practices and adult violence. Michael Thompson, co-author of Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys (details in "recommendations" section) and Best Friends, Worst Enemies: Understanding the Social Lives of Children, has found an interesting, related correlation between American children and European children. French boys in a McDonald's play area were 100% more likely to suggest cooperative play than American boys in the U.S. Boys in the U.S. were 50% more likely to express aggression.Dr. Thompson was taking exception to our desire to blame our violent teenagers on video games and movies. He points out that European children play the exact same games and watch the same movies, and yet exhibit dramatically lower levels of violent interaction. His tentative conclusion is that the problem originates much earlier, with the expectation that boys not talk about or express gentle feelings.
