to me, the most important part of this chapter is Jacoby's discussion of how moral relativism went from being an honored concept to an idea that is rejected outright by many. Her defense of the idea is sound and should be posted on the walls of schools instead of the 10 commandments. I say this because, in my opinion, we are all brought to make judgements all the time. However, the circumstances that we make those judgements in are unique to us. It is up to us, as humans, to make the right judgements. We are responsible for the consequences of our actions. Us, not god or anyone else. We need educated citizens to make good judgements. Turning to god will not make us come up with the right answers, but our training in ethics and our own sense of morallity will.I find that the same people who run the government say that relativism is bad turn around and to it constantly. Some of my favorite issues involve the states rights controversy. States rights! States Rights! I hear ad nauseum. OK. But when a state makes a law that they don't like (death with dignity in oregon), then federal law must prevail. What a bunch of hypocrites.
