Classic fiction group discussion

There has been interest shown in discussing novels that have a price tag of free. There is an excellent e book store that provides thousands of free novels and non fiction books. This site is Project Gutenberg. This is a site well worth checking out. It can be used on any type of reading device or computer. Also, classic novels are typically reasonably priced at book stores for those who do not have an e reader.

Would anyone be interested in selecting a classic novel to be read and discussed as a group?

Dickens, Joyce,Zola, Flaubert, Thacheray. Dumas, Conrad, James, Hugo and many many more are all available for free on sites such as Project Gutenberg.

Robert mentioned "Moby Dick" and heledd mentioned something from Dickens. Do you have a particular novel in mind heledd?

My favourite Dickens was Barnaby Rudge. I've not read Moby Dick. I'm told it's very weird. Was also thinking about Gulliver's Travels. The choice is huge!

Some of the booktalk discussions I have enjoyed the most are of classic novels - Don Quixote, Brothers Karamazov, Heart of Darkness, Paradise Lost. These books have stood the test of time and have a depth that repays patient reading. But they are not always easy, and having support through discussion is good. At the moment I am reading Thousand Mile Song by David Rothenberg, a book about whale music, and it has whetted my interest in Melville and American maritime history.

Love a good sea tale! After reading about the whale ship the Essex which was the inspiration for "Moby Dick" I was prompted to read the novel. The characters are unforgetable, the atmosphere is realistic, you feel the ship, you can feel the tension and fear.

I'm in for "Moby Dick".
