Searching for a young adults book set in Australia

I read this book 40 years ago so I'm afraid the details are sketchy, what I can remember is:
- It was set in either Sydney or Melbourne
It involved (or was about) newspaper boys (I remember trams being part of it)
It was probably set in the 1950s or possibly earlier
