WANTED: July - Sept 2022 NON-FICTION suggestions!

WANTED: July - Sept 2022 NON-FICTION suggestions!

Please tell us what non-fiction book, or books, you think we should read and discuss as a community in July, August & September of 2022.

Ideally, provide a link to where we can learn more about your book suggestion. To really sell it, add a few words about why you're suggesting the book.

Please feel free to comment on other people's suggestions; if you like a suggestion please say so, and if you find a suggestion not to be enticing it is also OK to say so. Feedback makes this process work.

Once we have a nice selection of non-fiction book suggestions we'll either pick the one with the most positive feedback or conduct a poll to select a winner.

What non-fiction book do you suggest?

Tailspin by John Armbruster

World War II tail gunner Gene Moran fell four miles through the sky without a parachute and lived. Captured by the Germans, he survived a harrowing eighteen months as a prisoner of war, including a six-hundred-mile death march in 1945 across Central Europe.

When Gene returned home, he kept those memories locked up for nearly seventy years. His nine children knew little of their dad's war story. But when John, a young history teacher, learns of Gene's amazing fall, he's desperate to learn more. Finally, Gene agrees.

So begins a series of "Thursdays with Gene" interviews. Gene, nearing his ninetieth birthday, recounts incredible tales. But John has no idea what wounds he's reopening. Gene's nightmares and grief return. But both men persevere, bonded by their close and growing friendship.

As the interviews go on, John faces an ordeal of his own. His wife is fighting brain cancer. What will happen to his wife and his two young children? John must continue uncovering Gene's story of survival as he himself confronts the greatest trial of his life.

Tailspin is more than a war story. It's a story of two men's separate journeys confronting trauma and loss. It's a story of resilience and hope.

If the above book is a religious rant against LGBTQ (I can't quite tell), it will be deleted. BookTalk will not waste time discussing that...

Tailspin sounds great. I'm wondering if the person suggesting that book is somehow related to the author. That's okay but I just like to know.

Yes, as LanDroid hints, we are definitely not reading a book that tries to label LGBTQ as immoral.

Mind, Language and Society by John R. Searle

I’m suggesting this book for a couple of reasons. The description below from the dust jacket should be enough to show relevance in today’s social and political climate. Also, since people seem to have less time for reading these days, its relatively short length at 170 pages, makes it easy to quickly grasp the essence of any section of the book.

“In this book, John Searle brings concepts such as reality, consciousness, and society from their abstract perch down to the world we all live in. He takes readers through the conceptual problems associated with basic metaphysics, the biology of the mind, the structure of consciousness, the paradox of intentionality, the nature of language, and the structure of the social universe. Condemning the belief that our world is dependent on our perception of it, Searle stresses that there is a real world, and discusses the ways in which philosophy can help us deal with it. In short, he takes questions apart, analyzes them, and then places them together to present a “total philosophy” In Mind, Language and Society, Searle teaches us how to practice philosophy in the real world.”

Re: WANTED: July - Sept 2022 NON-FICTION suggestions!

This is why we don't allow brand new members to suggest books for group discussion. Notice the member that suggested "Tailspin" never again posted. That post should have been made in the "Authors: Tell us about your non-fiction book!" forum, as opposed to being a book suggestion for group discussion. That author isn't here to discuss the book, just to promote it. And that's fine, as long as the promotional post is not spammed to any forum other than where it belongs.

I had this forum originally set to not allow anyone that doesn't have 5 or more posts to enter it. I'll figure out how to make that happen again, because very few authors will ever make 5 or more posts if they are here just to promote a book. So they won't be able to spam this forum.
