Best way to get to know our world is its songs

Unread post

"How many people are able to travel the whole world in their life time…?
How many people have the money, the time, the physical ability to do so? Best way to get to know our world is its songs. Song to song, story to story, musician to musician, Nick Wall’s interesting and infatuating project/book is taking us around the planet with all its diverse, colorful musical styles and cultures! "
- Kristi Stassinopoulou (Greek musician and star of the world music scene)

What does world music mean to you ?

Five years ago, when I began this project, I considered myself a world music fan, and I wanted to share the tunes that I'd been listening to. Since then I've been on an extraordinary journey. I've seen how great cultures rise and fall. I've seen how technology and globalisation have helped to drive relentless changes in how music is made over the last 100 years in every corner of the world. I've collated many inspiring stories of artists who dedicated themselves to reviving their musical roots. And through this I've found a new love and appreciation for music that's traditional, and specific to its culture.

I'm Nick Wall from Liverpool, creator of the musictodiefor blog which has had over 3 million hits. Five years ago I set myself the task of collecting traditionally based music from every country in the world, researching the artists and the cultures, and writing it all up in a book. I didn't quite know then what I was taking on, but it's now complete, and the book Around the World in 575 Songs : Traditional Music from all the World's Countries will be in bookstores by September, published in four volumes ! All 575 songs are streamed on my website which is now live, and you're welcome to drop in and start exploring the songs: https://aroundtheworldin575songs.com/.

Currently I'm crowdfunding to build awareness of the book and to help me cover the publishing costs. On my Indiegogo page you can pre-order the books at a discount. Between now and June 15th all books are on special offer and the whole series is on sale at 50% off. So please take a look at my video, learn more about the project, and if you feel suitably intrigued or inspired, then place orders !

This isn't an academic book, it's a book written for anyone interested in exploring other cultures and their music. The book and the stories in it are an invaluable resource for all those seeking answers on what role traditional music can play in the modern world. As a great musician once sang, "In this bright future you can't forget your past. "

Each country, and each culture, is special. This is what I've tried to show. This is a book with a message, and also a carnival of cultures. For those who like to try before they buy, I've posted a few brief extracts and a sample chapter (Mali) on my blog.

The crowdfunding campaign runs until 15th June.

Thanks for your time

Nick Wall
