The Old Man at the Bridge - a short story by Ernest Hemingway
Listen to it as an Audio Book. Whoever is reading it does a wonderful accent and makes it quite enjoyable.

Re: The Old Man at the Bridge - a short story by Ernest Hemingway
This is my first Ernest Hemingway story since my days in high school when I read his classic Old Man and the Sea.
I'm always in awe of good writing and Hemingway's "The Old Man at the Bridge" assures me that reading these short stories is going to be quite a pleasure.
It made me want to reach through the pages and help the 76 year old man down the road to safety. No old man should be walking 12 kilometers and having to fear for artillery but that's the evil of war for you.
I suggest you listen to the audio book either while you read or exclusively.

You're right, he packs a lot into only four pages. A sketch of the minor detritus of war.

The audio version was the voice of Stacy Keach. An excellent stage and film actor.
