ahhh so Archimedes had more BDNF than the average bearResearchers have found, for example, that animals with higher levels of BDNF learn faster and remember better than others.

It's a little comforting to know that since I put 12-15k steps in a day and climb 15-20 flights of stairs that I am doing good things for my brain while I am at it. Unfortunately I am still working on sugary drinks. I don't drink pop anymore, and realized that sweet tea was the same kind of sugar and calories. I just don't care for water, even if I am drinking 3 bottles of it a day. I do like my caffeine (thankfully not mentioned in this chapter) so I am trying to learn to like black tea or coffee. It is an ongoing battle. I suspect that I was probably consuming far more than 5 times the WHO recommendations.

It probably goes without saying that a Big Gulp soda was not one of humanity's crowning achievements.

Interesting way of looking at it. Think I'll go for a walk . . .For the last two million years or so of our existence, we spent virtually all our waking hours upright and on the move. . . . Like it or not, you belong to a standing, walking, and running species. Not a sitting and idling species. The sedentary life goes against the grain of what it means to be a human. It's a violation of programming, a rebellion against our inherited genetic legacy— and it kills us.

So you've probably heard about the studies finding that sitting is deadly. Result: stand-up desks became popular. Just the other day I read about a study finding that being stationary, not just sedentary, was the key determinant of a bad health outcome. So take a load off your feet, all you stand-up guys and gals at the office. Might as well be comfortable as your health slides downhill. Though I suppose the newer treadmill desks have the remedy locked up.

So since I got hubby a Ninja food processor/blender for his birthday we tried this....it wasn't bad. But I drank it like 15 minutes ago and I still don't feel any smarter...This drink recipe is nothing high-tech, weird, or complicated. It's the anti-snake-oil concoction, an evidence-based, scientific brew straight out of nature. I simply toss the following ingredients into a blender: two-thirds of a cup of spinach or kale; a quarter cup of blueberries and/or blackberries; half a banana; half a carrot; a few nuts; a teaspoon of flaxseed; three or four ice cubes; and half a cup of water. To be clear, this is a blended drink, and not a juice with the pulp filtered out.

I don't need to travel to a deserted island, I can do this in my own home, and I have a terrible time convincing myself it wasn't real. It is amazing how easy it is to influence memories, I have seen it happen myself. One night, while sitting on the dark beach and looking up at a spectacular display of stars, I heard someone yell my name above the sound of the waves and wind. I didn't think I heard it; I heard it. My head turned immediately toward the direction I believed the voice had come from. I was certain it happened, so much so that I looked around to see if I could find who had called out to me. I was even worried that drug smugglers may have come ashore until I realized that it was unlikely that they would know my name. Finally, after confirming that I was still alone on the island, I looked within. “Must have imagined it,” I told myself before putting the yell out of my mind and returning to my tent.
