Why Non-Commandments?

I wondered about your decision to not only rewrite the 10 Commandments, but to change their rhetorical form. Is there a certain philosophical base that accounts for your not wanting to tell people what to do? One of the members here posted the winning alternate commandments, which I recall were in the usual imperative mode. Does this suggest that we have a natural inclination to prescribe ethics for everyone else?
