On p. 236, he describes the research on the brain with the areas where it defines the boundaries of your self, and turning this off corresponds to "mystical" experiences. It reminded me of the doctor who had a stroke and described the same experience.

Basically it seems like her stroke gave her a shortcut to "enlightenment" and the "no-self" that Buddhists talk about

She did a TED talk, but her interview with Oprah is better I think (it is quite long and repetitive, but it's an amazing story):
