Here is an interview with Egan which may help us kick off the discussion of time and music in the book. Note her comment on the music of the seventies.

In this interview Egan quotes Neil Young saying that changing to digital recording was going to be the end of music because it is too clear and removes the nuances that the artist brings to recording. The same could be said about writing. Egan says she doesn't use a computer to write for many of the same reasons. I'm wondering what gets lost when a writer back spaces on a computer.

What exactly is music doing? Is it a realm where there is no time? Or does it transcend time and connect generations, different personalities, etc? Are the pauses in the PP chapter symbolic of trying to stop time??

I think that music can do any or all of these things, depending on the person whom it is affecting. The pauses may stop or expand time, they may slow down the music and time so that they last longer.
