I did notice the church bells bothering Gilbert so much. I think it was because he felt so guilty at going against God. It was like God was intruding.

You're probably right.
It was haunting that G deliberately chose the most dangerous place to commit suicide. He really wanted to make sure he didn't mess this up, right?

A dangerous place, yes, but also with religious overtones of going over the Falls (fallen) and going to hell.

Religion, or the avoidance of it, is a thread throughout the book. Let's discuss this more as people read further on.
