Looking for a book but I can't remember the title or author

I don't know if you can help but I was discussing this with my family and they didn't know what I was talking about. I remember decades ago reading a book where the family had a chicken. One night they were having chicken for dinner and realized it was their family's pet chicken and so they had a funeral and buried their dinner. Does anyone remember what book it came out of? I'm sure I didn't imagine this because I'm not this imaginative. If you have a clue, please let me know because it's really bugging me now.

I assume you used google to see if you could find something. I just did and couldn't get find anything obvious.
