Fantasy for a fussy reader

Has anyone got recommendations of great fantasy books that someone with an English degree would enjoy? I usually go for novels by people like Kate Atkinson and Alexander McCall Smith. I've read all the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series.

I read a little fantasy but maybe you would enjoy Richelle Mead's series - Game Board of the God's?
