I think a good Book seller has great general knowledge of what's available in the store, and what can be ordered into the store when necessary. Have a list for yourself of good books in each available genre if possible, and you will get extra points if you can personally recommend some of them. Never approach customers unless they look confused or approach you, beyond greeting them. That maybe a personal preference, I love to explore bookstores but hate salespeople hopping on me when I want to look around.

First and for most, be yourself, and most of all talk about the books that your really passionate about, People love to buy what others are passionate about. Books are no different then selling anything else. If your passionate about a genre let people know, If there are certain books you just love to read over and over, talk about it. Like I said your passion is what sells, that being said, also reading things that are out of your norm, I used to work at a movie rental place and every other night I would bring home a new movie, even if it did not look all that good, I watched it, and I may have found that I loved it, and didn't even know it, so then I would tell people about the movie I brought home, then others rented it and then they would come back and we would discuss it, then they would ask for more. movie people just as book people sometimes don't think outside their own box.. so your job is to do it for them and lead them to those books that they otherwise did not know that they would love, I was strict on just one Book series for a long time, Jean M Auel's Earth Children series.. Loved them never really found anything interesting in other books, until I would hear a friend or a stranger talking up a book, then well my curiosity got the best of me and now I own so many different books from all kinds of Genre's. So like I said other people's passion is someone Else's curiosity. Use it.

Acting as if you care when someone comments on a book ranks high with me. Recently, I was in a local bookstore and mentioned to the cashier that I enjoyed reading a particular author they had displayed at the checkout counter, but the cashier didn't even acknowledge I said anything. A major part of selling is listening and making a connection.
