Don't Bring Extinct Creatures Back to Life

A few of us have met in the BookTalk.org chat room in the past to watch these Intelligence Squared debates streamed live. We discuss the debates in real time. I'm excited about this one. Please check out the above link and post here if you want to do a live chat while the debate streams.

In a nutshell you watch the debate on the above site while having the BookTalk.org chat room opened in a different window.

A good podcast discussion of this topic is at https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/pr ... ls/9910296

One question I have is how much the frozen DNA continues to degrade over time, so whether it would still be possible to use mammoth DNA in a few centuries.

They say extinction is forever, but if DNA can still be used that might not be true for some species that humans have eliminated.

The context is that if we are cooking the whole planet anyway, then rushing in to restore species at great expense has high opportunity cost. We should instead aim to make Siberia cold enough again for mammoths, and wait till we are on track with that project before recreating the mammoths.
