I haven't read the article yet, but thank you for not putting an editorial slant in the thread title.

Not to keep bringing Jonathan Haidt into the discussion, but I believe he discusses this topic to some extent in his book, THE HAPPINESS HYPOTHESIS. He specifically talks about the sheer number of choices consumers have today—arguably a byproduct of technological advancement—and how it actually doesn't make us happier, but can bring us down. The cereal aisle in the grocery store comes to mind.
