Re: Big Bang Theory in Big Trouble
Title of this thread is wrong. Big Bang Theory is not in trouble. From the article conclusion:
"there is much more to understand about the initial conditions preceding inflation,” says Silverstein, adding that, however, “the big picture is that the Planck results are in striking agreement with the inflationary paradigm.”
Not exactly big trouble for the big bang. More like a problem with some data.

Re: Big Bang Theory in Big Trouble
of course, Robert.
as i have mentioned before here on BT, data is subject to reinterpretation resulting in a different "truth"
glad you pointed that out about data. it helped prove my point.
youre so honest

Anting.
Robert points out that you were misleading people about the contents of the article.
The pot then calls the silverware black and declares victory.
Show us that "honest" again, Ant. Humble us with your maturity while you call names, mislead, and evade.

Are you pushing your own short comings on us and safely hating them from a distance?
Is this the virtue of faith? To never change your mind: especially when you should?
Young Earth Creationists take offense at the idea that we have a common heritage with other animals. Why is being the descendant of a mud golem any better?

Re: Big Bang Theory in Big Trouble
So, we agree that "The Great Truths of Science" are really truths with a small "t" that matters, right?
More like, "The Great truths of Science"
or even..,
"the great (small "g") truths of Science"

Re: Big Bang Theory in Big Trouble
I personally pay little attention to the big bang theory. I'm confident it will mutate in many ways before maturity, perhaps enough that it no longer resembles what it is today. The phenomenon is simply so distant, time wise. There are still large unknowns.
As a disclaimer, for ant, it is the most reliable guess we have to how the universe started. It is where I would place all my chips, even with low confidence that it is the Truth.

Re: Big Bang Theory in Big Trouble
I assumed the thread title was tongue in cheek. In light of major new data, the Big Bang theory would be revised. The idea that a theory could be "in trouble" is contrary to the way science works.
Anyway, the Big Bang theory is very much a work in progress. It's all fairly nebulous at this stage.

Re: Big Bang Theory in Big Trouble
I’m still looking for the best place for the argument about the first cause. Here is a reply to a statement from the article about the trouble with the Big Bang Theory.
“Cosmologists do not understand exactly what would kick-start inflation.”
So let me use this argument once again.
Thomas Aquinas, "The Argument from Efficient Cause"
1. There is an efficient cause for everything; nothing can be the efficient cause of itself.
2. It is not possible to regress to infinity in efficient causes.
3. To take away the cause is to take away the effect.
4. If there be no first cause then there will be no others.
5. Therefore, a First Cause exists (and this is God).
