Is There a Human Spark?
It was only on rereading this chapter (I completed the book weeks ago) that I got it. We sapiens are of no more inherent value than any other animal on the planet. We want to believe that human lives are superior in some fundamental way. This fundamental difference is usually expressed this way: Only humans have eternal souls.
Although most humans are convinced of this, Harari informs us that scientists have not been able to find a soul in humans, but scientists doubt the existence of souls not only because of lack of evidence but because the idea of “soul” contradicts fundamental principles of evolution. Soul would be “an eternal individual essence that remains unchanged throughout life, and can survive even death intact”. Something that cannot be divided or changed cannot have come into existence through natural selection. Harari goes into much detail on this point in the chapter.
