306. "Auguries of Innocence," by William Blake. Harmon's note on the poem:
These miscellaneous sayings, from a notebook kept in 1803, were not published until 1863, many years after Blake's death. More than any of his Romantic contemporaries or successors, Blake kept up the Augustan habit of registering moral truths in epigrams, rather like Alexander Pope and Benjamin Franklin.

To see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.

A robin redbreast in a cage
Puts all heaven in a rage.
A dove-house filled with doves and pigeons
Shudders hell through all its regions.
A dog starved at his master's gate
Predicts the ruin of the state.
A horse misused upon the road
Calls to heaven for human blood.
Each outcry of the hunted hare
A fibre from the brain does tear.
A skylark wounded in the wing,

Bleh, all this long Romantic stuff (other than the Burns). I'm still waiting for something more modern, or another pleasant surprise like The "Jumblies."

"Nisus" is a youth who fell into a pool of blood; "Marcellus" is the illustrious nephew of Augustus who died at age twenty. Both Nisus and Marcellus are in Virgil's Aeneid.

TO THE MEMORY OF MR. OLDHAM
