The Stray American is longlisted for the Jerwood Fiction Uncovered Prize

Unread post

The Stray American is a new novel by Wendy Brandmark. Set in 2003, Larry Greenberg, a Jewish princeling according to his ex-girlfriend, escapes from his corporate law job in Boston to teach in a seedy American college near London’s Waterloo Station. He lives alone in Wimbledon, and his British lovers want him out of their beds before the morning. His search for companionship takes him to the Un-Americans, a tiny group of disaffected expatriate Americans. Is Larry, a flawed but engaging character, running away from his overbearing father, or in search of his identity and a sense of purpose?

Wendy Brandmark is a fiction writer, reviewer and lecturer. Her first novel, The Angry Gods was published by Dewi Lewis in 2003, and the US edition in 2005. Her reviews have appeared in The Financial Times, New Statesman, The Literary Review, The Independent and The Times Literary Supplement.

‘The Stray American is both social satire and a subtle parody of coming-of-age stories.’ – Kaite Welsh in the Literary Review
