Re: What Book Changed Your Approach to Life?

That's not a Turing Machine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombe I am referring to the Bombe in my post. Turing believed human responses are based on algorithms and as such Turing believed if a machine was programed to decipher and imitate these algorithms the machine could imitate acceptable human ...

Re: How should this discussion be formatted?

I have the book, 320 pages, no prologue or epilogue. The novel seems to be formatted as a journal. We could do 8 threads of 40 pages. The only problem I see is that 40th page may be in the middle of a journal entry.

Re: What Book Changed Your Approach to Life?

Turing had an obsessive desire to create a machine that could make choices, retain information and apply knowledge like a human. He believed a machine could respond like a human if it was programed correctly. Turing made improvements to an existing machine and created a program that solved the Germa...

Re: What are you reading right now?

Non fiction: "Alan Turing: The Enigma", I am having so much fun with this book, I find myself stopping to learn more about ideas and topics within the book. That means an A* book to me. Also reading, "Going Clear" , the BT non fic discussion book. This book reads like a novel, th...

Re: What Book Changed Your Approach to Life?

I have been reading and enjoying, "Alan Turing; The Enigma" for the last few months. What I enjoy the most about this book is how it encourages me to research new ideas, the philosophy of mathmatics is an example. This book has changed my approach to life because it has reinforced not only...

Re: Grand Budapest Hotel

I loved this movie. It was very slapstick, the characters were rich, especially the old lady. Once you got used to the wackiness and laughed a bit, the movie hits you with the serious and disturbing topic of WWII and the German SS. Even the violence had a feel of Chaplin, or Laurel and Hardy about i...

Re: Going Clear - Chapter 1: The Convert

I am wondering about ethics and ethical behavior, Hubbard says that to be Clear, ethical and moral standards are high, but then he goes on to say that to be Clear is to possess the capability of killing people. Killing people over the phone no less. Where does the ethical and moral standards come if...

Re: Official Poll to select a FICTION book for June, July & August 2015

I voted for all three. I started reading the King novel when it first came out, honestly, I scrapped it after about 40 pages, however I would make another attempt if it is selected. "Flowers" has the potential for interesting and rellevant discussion on the themes of the novel which is why...
