Re: Searching for gravitational waves is like searching for alien intelligence
Sheesh maybe you need to slow down or something. You seem incapable of apprehending that I'm not directly equating the two projects. I'm challenging your contention that once scientific observations have provided no positive data for 20 years, the project must be considered non-scientific. I already addressed this previously, quoting myself below, not sure why another thread is required to highlight this non-communication.
LanDroid wrote:It's a valid comparison in that you stated because there has been "zero progress and zero evidence for over 20 years" on SETI, it is therefore not scientific. There has been the same level of progress on Einstein gravitational waves in a similar time period, yet I expect you would hesitate to declare that project non-scientific or pseudo-science.Wrong. Einstein gravitational waves and SETI are still scientific hypotheses and are active in the scientific community. Obviously there is nothing in the scientific method stating "You've got 20 years to prove it or it's dead!" We never would have found Higgs-Boson (and many other scientific confirmations or negations) with your standard.Ant asked Is a hypothesis that produces nothing after 20 years still a scientific hypothesis? Maybe in your heart it still is. In the scientific community, it dies.

"I'm challenging your contention that once scientif..,"
Actually that was a question and not a contention. My primary contention was much different. Hence, a review of what I actually said is in order before you continue with your strawman.
Thanks

Yes I admit there is indeed a question as you assert, but notice upon very careful reading it is immediately followed by a contention. Perhaps you need to slow waaay down and read your words above at least two more times. As usual when you accuse others of such error, the strawman is actually on your part.Ant asked Is a hypothesis that produces nothing after 20 years still a scientific hypothesis? Re: Searching for gravitational waves is like searching for alien intelligence
Read before i questioned the progression or lack thereof a hypothesis.
Other than that , youd be mischaractering my primary contention.
But it would be understandable, I guess.
This is about demarcation criteria mostly. Questions about when to break off "science" that demonstrates zero progress is just one consideration, not a primary one.
By the way, SETI 's zero progress is actually a FACT not a contention.

Re: Searching for gravitational waves is like searching for alien intelligence
Lets start with this question:
The search for gravitational waves is based on what, Landroid?

If you're going to call out LanDroid in a new thread, why don't you clearly state what your challenge is.ant wrote: Hence, a review of what I actually said is in order before you continue with your strawman.
So you're saying if you search for something you need to be specific about what you're searching for to call it science? How specific? And what does it matter if you want to call it "science" or not? Scientists are using methods of science to search the universe, what difference does it make? Call it "banana" if you want.

Actually, the higgs boson finding has been disputed. Yes - disputed by scientists, not the Bible
