Re: Do you like Horror movies?
I love horror flicks and am looking forward to the latest Paranormal Activity :) I'm curious, since we're on the subject, about any good horror reads? I don't think I've ever read a good horror story. I've read several ghost stories, but nothing that ever gave me nightmares the way a good horror fli...

Re: The Sad State of Editing In Today’s Fiction
I tend to avoid popular authors for just what you've stated Charlie. 1) I'm honestly afraid of editors attacking my work in progress, but I am grateful for their jobs. I will admit I wonder what some of them are thinking when there are long stretches in a novel that neither add or propel the plot. 2...

Re: Sex scenes - yes or no?
I agree with Avid Reader that I don't mind lurid. When I seek out erotic literature I want to read that sort of content, but I get tired of sex in so many forms of media. I really only enjoy it when it adds to the story, is skillfully done, and is necessary. I like it when the author strives to crea...

Re: Part I: Gatekeeper's Testimony, The Bride, The Fossil-Seeker
(Ariah) she does some stuff which is a bit suspicious, like denying the existence of a suicide note ... and then what is the real reason she becomes the widow-bride in such an obsessive way, to the point of making absolutely sure she is there to identify her husband's body? is she fractured, brittl...

Re: Part I: Gatekeeper's Testimony, The Bride, The Fossil-Seeker
This does make the story harder to follow, especially if you put the book down for a while and come back to it. In The Falls, I think Oates uses this technique to some advantage because the non-sequential narrative emphasizes the sate of mind of the main characters, perhaps confused, disoriented, s...

I'm not sure I'm going to finish this book, I'm getting sea-sick from all the back and forth plotlines.

Re: What Books Do You Dislike?
Wow, I suddenly don't feel like such uncultured twit. I couldn't stand the end of Lord of the Flies and most of Dickens drives me completely bonkers (I never finished Oliver Twist, it was the first book I had to buy cliffnotes for because I couldn't read it). I've never been able to get into the pop...

Re: Hi and hope you all can help!!!!
How about the Sherlock Holmes series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? The first one is called A Study in Scarlet and it's free :) If you haven't read the Harry Potter series, those are great. Also, if you like mystery and a little romance plus a nice douse of history you absolutely have to read The Guerns...

Re: First Book You Ever read.
I think it was called, "The Napping House." I was able to meet the authors and have them sign it for me. Very cute book that involved various critters joining Grandma in her bed until a flea plops on the cat on top and causes all of them to jump and break the bed. I'm pretty sure this is m...
