Re: Spirituality without religion

To me spirituality is being connected to all that is good in the world - e.g. nature, love, art, and yes, religious thoughts/ideas. But a person can experience spirituality without religion.

The Triple Agent

If you're looking for a wide, in-depth canvas of the workings of the CIA you won't find it in The Triple Agent , but you will find a deep, narrow slice of the agency. Part of that slice will show how so many of the agency's successes and failures are caused by the strengths and flaws (and in-fightin...

Re: Do you think alcohol and drugs help writing?

Absolutely not! Think of all the writers who were destroyed by drugs and alcohol. Think of that famous remark about Shakespeare: One of the things that made him different, and greater, than other Elizabethan writers, was that he didn't drink. Also people who drink or drug are not in touch with their...

The Destiny of the Republic

I had no interest in James Garfield; so I bought this book somewhat reluctantly. (Certainly, the title didn't thrill me.) I’m glad I did as it’s one of the best and most emotion-filled history books I’ve read in a long time. Much of the book is sad; as James Garfield, who never sought the presidency...

George, Nicholas and Wilhelm: Three Royal Cousins and the Road to World War I

I think this book could have been a little shorter, but for anyone interested in the road to World War I (and World War II) this book is a must, as it offers a very unique, and sad, prespective. Ms. Carter brings the three flawed monarchs to life and paints a vivid picture of the royal courts. She a...

Moneyball

I'm no longer much of a baseball fan, but I loved this book, especially the way a few individuals came to see the game and its statistics in different and revolutionary light. I know this is a stretch, but the book reminds me of the way Einstein, Darwin and other scientists changed the way we see th...

I also found the book inspiring. Yes, Washington made mistakes, but he kept learning, kept going, and that's why we became an independent nation.

Re: What are you currently reading?

Moneyball . I'm no longer a big baseball fan, but to me much of this book is about seeing the world differently. Also, I found it interesting the way the ideas of two guys who had experienced failure came together. Recently, I finished Open , by Agassi. A wonderful book about a lot more than tennis...
