Re: The Last Unicorn - Chapters 1 - 3
I finished chapter one. The book is a perfectly standard beginning. It introduces the protagonist and we learn the protagonist's goal. Also introduced are antagonists who are hindering our protagonist already. I wonder if these antagonists last the book, or if they are just the first obstacle. There...

Re: How should we organize this discussion?
<t>There are fourteen chapters of an average of fifteen pages each. I finished chapter one last night. The book is a perfectly standard beginning. We have a protagonist and we know the protagonist's goal. We have antagonists who are hindering her already. There is not much dialog yet. There are touc...

Re: Please check in here if you're going to join the "The Last Unicorn" discussion!
I obtained a print copy (studies show that print is retained in the mind better than electronic form) of this book from one of my county libraries this week and not only plan to join in, but have already begun it. Right from the start Beagle demonstrates amazing writing craft. One knows from the fir...

Re: OFFICIAL POLL: Vote on our next FICTION book! (Nov. thru Jan. 2019)
Oops. I'm so sorry. I voted when I shouldn't have rights yet. (I was curious what the error message would say when I tried, truth be told. Little did I guess my vote would be accepted!) I will definitely participate in the book discussion if one of the two women writers win. Both of these books look...

Re: How shall this discussion be organized?
Hi PC. I am a relative newcomer here and so defer to your wisdom in preferring to set the discussion up over sections and on topics. I will continue my reading and commenting by chapter privately, and not post it until you establish the format. At that point, I'll post relevant parts of what I have ...

Re: How shall this discussion be organized?
I wonder why we are considering not discussing the book serially chapter by chapter. It's how I for one plan to read this book. I think that in our day and time reading the classics that formed our opinion of what government ought to be, as we are proposing to do here, is extremely important. Obviou...

Re: "The Falls", Part I/ Honeymoon
Wow, 10 pages in, and the husband has gone over the edge! Can't wait to find out why! I shouldn't have read this. I'll stay off here until I receive my copy of the book in the mail. Maybe next weekl. I wonder if it would be possible to establish a timeline for when things can be discussed so that w...

Re: Suggestions needed for our September/October fiction discussion
Thanks for mentioning that site, lindad. I read the description of several of her works - she sure likes short story collections - and found The Falls to appear the most interesting of them after all. A nice, juicy, complicated family drama!

Re: Suggestions needed for our September/October fiction discussion
<t>Thank you for the suggestion, Suzanne, to start my own book discussion of The Lost Valley (1921) by J. M. Walsh in the unlikely event it is not the finalist. Doing that would not have occurred to me if you had not mentioned that as an option.<br/> <br/> I like your suggestion of a Joyce Carol Oat...

Re: Suggestions needed for our September/October fiction discussion
<t>I realize I don't get a vote because I have not yet made 25 posts, but I really like Giselle's suggestion. <br/> <br/> I'll toss another one out there. I have just begun The Lost Valley (1921) by Australian writer J. M. Walsh (1897-1952). This is one of Walsh's earliest works and out of copyright...
