Re: Jan. & Feb. 2011 - Fiction poll now open, please vote!

Two votes for PP and one for Dickens. By the way, I would love to participate more, but some of the novels that are nominated are SO long. The current novel up for discussion is over 900 pages and so is Dickens. I'm a reader and an English teacher, so I'm not afraid of a long book, but I think it mi...

Re: SuPer Duper Late!

Has anyone seen the movie? I tried looking for a movie version on Netflix. There is a children's cartoon version and an old black and white version directed by Orson Welles. The reviews for the latter were pretty scathing, so I haven't watched either yet. There is also a ballet inspired by the play...

Re: SuPer Duper Late!

Just so happens that this was near the top of my to read list, hoping to get started soon. Summer long accurately sets the pace I am hoping to achieve with this one. Good to hear. I'm trying to read 50 or so pages a day and then I'm going back through some of the posts. I used the same reasoning yo...

Re: "Eat Pray Love" Pre-Reading: Suggestions?

I read EPL and I enjoyed her trip to India. I agree she was terribly whiney in the beginning and the Italian portion of the book did little for me. Many of her religious observations parallel my own, although I am not into Gurus and swamis per se. I am currently reading Committed and I find her mor...

Re: Reading Bestsellers

Personally, I don't make a point of going out of my way to read bestsellers. If there is one that strikes my fancy, I'll give it a shot, but the fact that the masses find it enjoyable doesn't neccessarily mean it's good, or that it's worthwhile. History is riddled with talentless schlubs that have ...

Re: Reading Bestsellers

I waited three months on a waiting list at my library for "The Help". I'm reading it now, wanted to know what all the hype is about. It's all hype. I stay away from bestsellers. I read the NY Times book section every week and I am stunned by the top five books on the bestseller list. If a...

Don Quixote as an archetype

I'm still working my way through DQ, but as I read, there are several movie characters who come to mind. The first few chapters of the DQ are quite humorous: there's DQ making his own armor, convincing the inn keeper to knight him, and forcing the peasant to stop whipping his servant (who resumes wi...

Reading Bestsellers

So, I just finished reading The Help. I was very, very disappointed. For anyone who has read it, maybe you will agree. The African American vernacular was just terrible (and why did only the black characters speak in Southern "slang"?), the characters were very flat and stereotypical, ther...
