Re: Old Testament - Genesis (1 of 66)

I've tried to read the Bible several times - I've never come further than Corinthians, but I'll try again, but there's one question I keep asking myself every time I read Genesis: How could Abel have any children without incestious relations arising? Or is incest allowed when there is no alternativ...

Re: What movie scared you when you were a kid?

Not so much a movie, but Twin Peaks is pretty terrifying. Sarah Palmer and Laura Palmer for that matter screaming still give me nightmares. And I really did not like Saw nor any of the three sequels that were shoved down my throat at parties. Bloody awful.

Re: Avatar

poohza said: The jellyfish/seed things though, awesome. Yeah, those jellyfish are adorable. Great way to allude to Cameron's nautical documentaries... I've seen it on Boxing Day (which is Second Christmas Day here, haha  ), and I was impressed. The local newspaper compared the story to Dances W...

Re: Reading for pleasure! What are you reading now?

I've been so occupied with school and sports lately that I haven't got much time to read anymore, such a shame - but I managed to finally finish Wuthering Heights and La Fille de Monsieur Linh by Philippe Claudel and as of yet I'm proceding into Beowulf, Ulysses and a Dutch novel whose title transla...

Two Women by Harry Mulisch

One of the great three of the Dutch post-war authors, Harry Mulisch has written many great works, and the novella Two Women is one of his finest. Loosely based on the myths of both Orpheus and Oedipus, Two Women centres about a divorced 35-year-old conservator and a twenty-year-old hairdresser, who ...

Re: How many books on your TBR?

There are more on it than I would like... but some books have my preference, like The Divine Comedy, but unfortunately I'm unable to get those. Mostly if I lay my hands on any international classic, they're either very expensive or in Dutch, and in Dutch some sentences are so deformed and lose their...

Re: Berlusconi attacked with the Cathedral of Milan

lottebeertje, I think we should have more discussion of world (vs. just U.S.) politics, so thanks for the post. Constitutionally, what are the options for Italians? Forgive my ignorance, but could the equivalent of the Italian Parliament call for a new election? It appears that Berlusconi is an ext...

Re: Octopus' use of tools

I read something about an octopus using a coconut shell, is this what this forum is about? Amazing that a non-vertebrae shows to have an above-average intelligence. Makes me realise once more that we are not that special as humans...

Berlusconi attacked with the Cathedral of Milan

Last Sunday the Prime Minister of Italy, Silvio Berlusconi, was attacked while he was signing autographs, a bizarre attack which you all probably have seen by now. He has been admitted to the San Raffaele hospital in Milan and he's allowed to leave tomorrow. He suffered a broken nose, several broken...
