I think the reason there are so many series' in the fantasy genre is due to the fact that the author is not simply telling a story but is creating a whole world and 1 book is simply not enough for that... imo. I am also very sad to hear of his passing, my husband first introduced me to his works and despite thinking I could never like fantasy I am now an avid fan! The Belgariad is my favourite and I have Mr Eddings to thank for changing my perceptions about what is a wonderful genre... :(

I don't think i will even watch the film, I agree with amandamarie about the ending, it is not supposed to be a happy story - it is supposed to make you think about what is a very difficult situation for any family to have to deal with. I think a happy ending will just detract from the overall story...

OMG!! Haven't read the book but watched the BBC series, was seriously depressed for about 2 days after the final episode....Thomas Hardy certainly didn't seem to enjoy happily ever afters...Also I don't think I liked Angel very much? :(

I was so disappointed with Turn of the Screw, I read it expecting a fantastically creepy ghost story, it was just boring, nothing really happened....really had to force myself to finish it. Also Lord of the Flies - had to read it for english lit, however can't complain too much, the same class intro...
