Re: WANTED: FICTION suggestions for our next group discussion!

As just raised at https://www.booktalk.org/post181705.html#p181705 The Fall by Albert Camus would be a good book to discuss. Hi all, this is my first post and the reason why I sought out & joined this forum: to see if anyone else got the same message from Albert Camus The Fall . Or if there's an...

Re: The Fall (or Camus in general)

Hello lexirexic, thanks, great post. Camus is superb. Booktalk.org had a good discussion fifteen years ago about his excellent collection of short stories Exile and the Kingdom , at this link - https://www.booktalk.org/exile-and-the-kingdom-by-albert-camus-f87.html The Fall is available for free her...

Re: The Day of the Triffids - Ch. 1 - 3

Wyndham calls the discussion of how the triffid got its name a “philological gymkhana”. The ‘tri’ part is based on the novel active, three-pronged walking root, while ‘ffid’ just sounds good. Philology is the love of logic and language, while a gymkhana was a gentlemen’s social and sporting club in ...

Re: The Day of the Triffids - Ch. 1 - 3

In case you were wondering how a triffid might walk, here is Wyndham’s explanation. He shows both remarkable creative imagination and clear power of description, enabling the reader readily to visualise the walking plant. And of course the popular name triffid comes from this tripod locomotion. The ...

Re: Fractured Faiths

Christianity is fracturing into many new divisions. Here is a rough draft outline of some of these changes. They cover a wide range of beliefs and moral systems including who belongs under the Christian umbrella. There's plenty of room for more categories or details on each one. I continue to see m...

Re: The Day of the Triffids - Ch. 1 - 3

Wyndham, certainly was on to something. Not having been born until 1964, I cannot picture in my mind such a wide spread and advanced amount of cognitive dissonance of those decades. It seems to me that because of the abundance of products and general satisfaction of life people perhaps weren’t capt...

Re: The Day of the Triffids - Ch. 1 - 3

Wyndham’s astounding level of cynicism about the degraded mentality of popular culture appears in his account of the first media reports of walking triffids: “And now, folks, get a load of what our cameraman found in Ecuador. Vegetables on vacation! You've only seen this kind of thing after a party,...

GMO’s… Another laboratory experiment…Are they good or evil. Good question. GMOs have enabled vast increases in agricultural productivity. Risks include supporting monoculture cropping that could collapse from disease, chemical dependence that has unintended side effects on weeds and insects, and po...

Re: The Day of the Triffids - Ch. 1 - 3

Bill was a boy when he first saw a triffid growing as a weed in his parent’s garden. His father inspected it, as it was so strange and foreign in appearance. There had been no alarm about triffids before they first saw it. No one had seen one fully grown. It had a straight stem, a woody bole, and th...

Re: The Day of the Triffids - Ch. 1 - 3

It is one of the mysteries of the story. Where did triffids come from? The origin of the triffids came from the need for genetic engineering to increase food supply. Amidst political debate about satellites designed to conduct biological warfare, nations conducted secret research on improved vegeta...
