Re: 173 Declared Democratic Presidential Candidates

History does show that there isn't much point in trying to apply civilised debate and rationale to racists and fascists. They are the way they are exactly because they reject such discussions and are more than willing to entangle and destabilise resistance to them by using their trademark hysterical...

Re: What FICTION books would make for a great discussion?

Day Of The Triffids by John Wyndham is certainly worth reading.

Re: How can we get people more interested in reading?

A lot of people do argue against having set texts in schools and it can be irritating for teenagers, but education is concerned with defining and providing the best examples to pupils and students. The debate is the same as in any other area of life - what is the best quality available and do I want...

Re: Distribution of Wealth

It's certainly true that the Labour Theory Of Value is seen by mainstream economists as a dissident position, as they prefer to support the idea of supply and demand. Adam Smith was in general agreement with Marx's analysis in this area. It is a practical tool.

Re: Distribution of Wealth

May I ask to what, specifically, you refer when you write, "Marxist economic theory?" More dirigiste? You don't think our government exercises enough control over our economy? The amount of control is not the problem. The skewing of that control is the problem.[/quote] Of course you may as...

Re: Distribution of Wealth

Maybe a dirigiste approach would be mare acceptable in USA, if the idea of Marxist economic theory terrifies so many people. Just a passing thought - how else is equality of opportunity to be achieved ?

Re: Distribution of Wealth

It's probably true to say that the USA will never apply Marxist economic analysis to its budgetary requirements, I would think.

Re: What FICTION books would make for a great discussion?

Knowing how hard it is to sustain discussions of books (easy to sustain arguments), I'd always lean toward shorter fiction. I was thinking of rereading Graham Greene's The Power and the Glory . It's about a Catholic priest who has fathered a child. I'm sure I didn't fathom it well when I first read...

Re: What FICTION books would make for a great discussion?

I hadn't thought about it in that way; I was waiting for it to become something more, but of course that wasn't the writer's intention. It did strike me that a writer can get caught between writing from direct experience and writing as a witness - and it felt that those lines were blurred.
