Re: Good political books?
I always liked "Truman" (can't remember the author). It's a biggie but very interesting. I've always thought Harry Truman to be one of the best Presidents the USA ever had (even though I'm a conservative Republican). We sure need someone like him now! As a companion piece, try "Americ...

Re: Fats Domino
Amen to that, brother! Two others I forgot to mention from the 1960's - Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. Jimi was undoubtedly the best rock guitarist of all time. I'll never forget his version of the national anthem played at Woodstock. The only 2 others that have even gotten close were Eric Clapton a...

Re: Fats Domino
God bless you, Fats! You and Chuck Berry were my favorite artists when I was a teenager in the late 1950's. In the late 1960's I graduated to hard rock, my faves being Jefferson Airplane, Eric Burdon and the Animals, The Who, The Stones and Joe Cocker. I still like them all, but in later age I've be...

Re: Where has civility gone in American society?
Not in the least. It simply means to me that I am proud of of Texas and it's part in Civil War history. Slavery was a cause of the war, but not the main one. Most soldiers in the CSA never owned a single slave. They were just fighting for independence. I'm sorry to have brought this up. This thread ...

Re: Where has civility gone in American society?
I know nothing about the Frankfurt theory, but to me there is absolutely no difference between Antifa and the KKK. Both are violent extremist wings of the left and right that are trying to tear apart our country. Have you seen any conservatives out there trying to deface or remove statues of Dr. Mar...

Re: Lack of compromise led to Civil War
I'm not a historian by degree but I've been a history buff all my life. My areas of interest are Ancient Roman Empire, Dark and Middle Ages, Mexico and Latin America and military history, especially the Civil War and WW1. Really enjoy historical fiction from these eras also. I've been working to try...

Re: Lack of compromise led to Civil War
Lack of compromise on slavery was indeed one of the causes of the civil war. However, compromise is a two-way street in which both sides have to engage in a discussion to reach a common ground and find a solution. However (as today) both sides were polarized. Rabid abolitionists in the North insiste...

Re: Currently reading Doctor Sleep, if you'd like to discuss it
I loved Mr. Mercedes which was book 1, but just couldn't get into Doctor Sleep. IMO, Stephen King should have made Mr. Mercedes a stand alone book instead of adding to it. Stephen King is a great author, but he does have his weird periods. His early work like Salem's Lot, The Shining and The Stand w...

Here's three I'd like to nominate. #1: The Power Of One by Bryce Courtenay. #2: Recessional by James Michener. #3: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo.

Re: Can you please suggest epic sci fi books but short in length
Here's another even older oldie! Earth Abides by Gordon Stewart. Originally published in 1949, I think it was one of the first post apocalyptic sci fi novels. I've read it twice and was really impressed with the treatment of how the survivors adjusted eventually to a more primitive society after all...
