Re: Who exactly wrote all 3 "Good Books"?
I'm sorry, it's The Evolution of God by Robert Wright. Our next non-fiction book. A really good author who explores some of those questions is Karen Armstrong, also. I have been reading her History of God in a book group that I go to. I think I got the two books mixed up. But it seems from just a pe...

What did you think of the translation of Don Quixote that we read on booktalk a couple of months. If you have not read it I think that that one is a good translation. In my opinion, it is an enjoyable book to read.

Re: Wuthering Heights
You know, when his wife throws herself over the banister, ultimately killing herself, the reader almost shrugs off the tragedy because they know Jane and Mr. Rochester can now be together, when, really, this "mad woman," whose story is never clearly explained from her perspective, ended h...

Re: Who exactly wrote all 3 "Good Books"?
It seems like some of that is what our next book will be about: The History of God. Scholars spend their whole lives studying all of the questions that you have. And there are a lot of disagreements among scholars and practitioners of all three religious faiths over some of the answers. All of your ...

I love that book also. It is kind of the reason that I joined book talk. It is the sort of book you want to talk about and analyze. I thought, I have to find a group where people talk about books like it. I am glad you are enjoying it.

Re: Fury over Richard Dawkins's burka jibe as atheist tells of his 'visceral revulsion' at Muslim dress
I agree with Dawkins that the burka is a symbol for oppression. I hesitate to use "revulsion", however. Women choose to wear burkas and for some it is a symbol of their spirituality. I agree with him that the french law is a problem. The french law takes choice away from women. Some argue ...

Re: Why the Matter is Settled
I think, as long as there are not fundamental divisions among the participants (see, for example, Bill Moyers' Genesis: A living Conversation). I love Bill Moyers. When the views of participants are conditioned by opposite perspectives, there is no chance for a meaningful, rewarding discussion. Sta...

Re: Why the Matter is Settled
Be honest with me, aren't the comments that BT members make in multiple posts just their 'telling me' how I should interpret the Bible? I don't have any problem in a Bible discussion with someone stating their position. I will disagree if necessary but don't make stuff up. The protracted discussion...

Re: Why the Matter is Settled
No, you need to choose some controversy within your own world of Bible literalism or scholarship and find someone to debate you. Here is not a good hunting ground for that. I think you can't see that the gap is insuperable when it comes to the prospect for discussion. I agree with you, Dwill. I do ...
