Hello all! Just for fun I went back to read my original "Introduce Yourself!" entry. Turns out, I don't seem to have made one! So, here I am to inflict a proper greeting on the current members of our humble community.
I'm actually not new at all. I'm pretty old in Booktalk years. But I've been away ...

Re: the point is...moot
grin.I perhaps wasn't *quite* as excited as you, but maybe it's because in the past 2 weeks I've heard or read "mooted" used correctly 5 times! (counting Grayling's all as one, once on BBC radio, once in Al Franken's Lying Liars , and the others I don't remember). And yes, I noticed, because it is ...

Re: Discussion of Nov/Dec poll
Hullo,Having not been around for the past 6 weeks or so, I haven't replied to anything! However since this string isn't HORRIBLY old, I'll put in two cents worth here.I didn't vote (see above comment), but we've had close elections before I believe. And *every* poll has had a smattering of folks who ...

Re: How did you learn of BookTalk?
searched on "book club non-fiction online". It was about 4 or 5 pages into the results though. Turned up alot of local book clubs that read Danielle Steele (sp?) and other ... things. Also turned up Oprah's book club, which as far as I could tell also reads pretty fluffy stuff (I'm being kind here).

Re: Who would attend a chat with Ann Druyan?
Unfortunately, don't know. Still in Ch 5 of Dot. Just can't get into it. Certainly if I've made more progress and feel some inspiration by the time of the chat, I'd like to attend. However, I won't vote 'cause maybe I still won't have anything good to contribute about the book by that time. But maybe ...

Re: which book i want
Hi everyone,I just voted for "What is Good" by Grayling. I looked online; here's a list of libraries worldwide that definitely already have it. Generally you can just order it through interlibrary loan, but if you have trouble you can bring this list and they will get a copy for you.My second choice ...

Re: philosophy suggestions
Bah! At most, it could be the cornerstone of western philosophical thought, but some might even argue with that.

Re: Overall Impressions
yeah, that's what I meant. I meant my finding it boring may be entirely due to being so familiar with the topics. I never said anything about anyone else finding it boring nor that it's common knowledge. Pls reread.Yes again. I assume Chris was refering to our own too imminent self-inflicted demise ...

Re: A problem with perspective...
Yeah, I think largely his criticisms were directed toward the big traditional monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) which I believe all say that we (human beings) were created in the god's image. I understood this to be the foundation of his attack on our species-centric conceits ...
