Re: House January 6 Committee hearings
Mike Pence is getting quite an uplift in these hearings. Does that make him more viable as the Republican standard-bearer in 2024? Pence is getting a lot of positive vibes simply for not being a traitor. How low the bar has fallen. I've been thinking Liz Cheney would be a great Republican candidate...

Re: Divided We Fall - Chapters 1 - 5
I haven't read much of this book, but I suspected the piece by Ahmari would be objecting to "both-sidesism," since French seems to be holding pretty close to that kind of judicious view. I assumed Ahmari would be coming from the left, though, instead of the right, maybe because I myself f...

Re: Both science and religion are wrong
Good point! If we were to discover some factual information about "God," then this god would become part of the known, natural world and cease to be a supernatural entity. I get what you're saying, but I'm not so sure 'bout all that. We would understand a God's intervention as supernatura...

Re: Both science and religion are wrong
How many universes are there? If there is only one truth then things are either true or not true. If they are true then they are part of nature and if not they don't exist. If truth defines is what is real and supernatural things are real then they are part of reality, part of nature, and therefore...

Re: Both science and religion are wrong
Both science and religion are wrong when they try to talk about the existence of God and creation and when they try to define existence ; and here is why, and I would be happy if someone could prove me wrong! I realize the OP is long gone, but in case he comes back, willing to engage in dialogue . ...

Re: Divided We Fall - Chapters 6 - 10
What was meant by "beyond debate?" Was it meant that the topic is not worthy of debate because the matter has been settled, or was it meant that it is not debatable because debating it is too politically charged and dangerous? I think it's the latter, Chris. French doesn't explain who org...

Re: Divided We Fall - Chapters 6 - 10
In Ch. 8, French recounts a discussion he had with a group of liberals, moderates, and conservatives. He wanted to see if this diverse group could envision a return to civility in America, tackling some of the issues so prevalent in our culture war. Then he asks this question: Is Caitlyn Jenner a wo...

Re: Divided We Fall - Chapters 1 - 5
In Ch. 3, David French makes an argument that traditional Christians are being cast "outside the boundaries of mainstream American society, placing them in the same category as racists for upholding a biblical definition of marriage." French discusses the cultural divide between blue and r...

Re: A better understanding of my LIBRARY
I even own a collection of leather-bound books called the Easton Press "100 Greatest Books Ever Written." Hey, me too! I have a story about how I acquired them. When I was living in Florida (about 12 years ago), I heard about a guy who was selling his Easton Press collection. There were a...

Re: Do you support the Second Amendment?
I just realized with something of a shock that I don't support the Second Amendment. Why is this statement about hardware even in the Constitution? Eight of the rights in the Bill of Rights have continued to be relevant for our democracy right up to the present day. I support the Second Amendment, ...
