Timely and timeless...these made me laugh.“Very few things happen at the right time, and the rest do not happen at all. The conscientious historian will correct these defects.” - Herodotus

Re: Cumpulsory reading in High School
Thanks for the direction, Geo. I'll try L'Allegro first and I'll put the Dartmouth site to good use. I read Beowulf when I was a kid and I liked it -- unusual for me at that time...then I found John Gardner's Grendel, it was quite a few years later, but remembering Beowulf made me pick it up and I l...

Re: Cumpulsory reading in High School
Hi President Camacho, The art of translation is fascinating. If I had my life to live over I'd learn 6-7 languages just so I could read all my favorites in all their original languages and then read them again in various translations -- it would be a 360 degree view of the work, a regular house of m...

Re: Cumpulsory reading in High School
Wouldn't it be great to use Chris Hitchens' work as a subject in school? Not as an example of bad or good but as an example of bad AND good. Incisive was Hitchens, and stylish and sly and informed and he knew his ego was enormous and sometimes, although probably more than he owned up to, he admitted...

Cumpulsory reading in High School
The I used to think about this: http://blogs.bookforum.com/review/2014/01/14/why-we-should-stop-teaching-novels-to-high-school-students/ So many years have gone by that I don't think about it anymore but this article brought it all back to me. Natasha Vargas-Cooper talks about The Sun also Rises but...

Re: Would you consider book recycling to be as offensive as book burning?
In my town there are places to donate books and that's what I end up doing with mine. Whenever the shelves need to be organized I cull the flock and send them off to who-knows-where to be read again by new eyes. The term 'book burning' these days (in the 'free' world) means forbidding or restricting...

Maybe the driving force is laughter.
There are some howlers in Proverbs. I'll look some up tomorrow, this old girl needs sleep right now.
Good night all!

Re: Rihard Dawkins Interview on Slate
Flatfish flounders taste really good, Geo. Driving force? Staying alive. Most life wants to stay alive and works toward that end. Is that a driving force? It's the 'keep on stepping' rule. Here's an interesting article: http://philosophynow.org/issues/99/Simon_Blackburn Maybe I'll start a thread on ...

Re: How to shake off from the awful feelings that your life will get worse every day?
Sal-in-Paradise, Thoughts of suicide and escape are in everyone's mind to a degree. It's a steam vent and a back door to run through when things are too .... uncomfortable (weak word, sorry). From your posts you are a thinking person sincerely looking for insights. I attach an interesting link from ...
